The United States Olympic Committee approached me about producing a variety of motion graphics to accompany their marketing presentations. All the animations are based on their “Team USA” mark and involve transformations into teamusa.org URLs and various social media logos. As they represent a sports organization, the animations evoke athleticism and teamwork without ever referencing a specific event or game. Thus the letters in “team” jump off the spinning USA- as a team- and land together again just as the rest of the URL is unfurling. The brief called for the logo to be a full 3D animation, so the main movement was created and rendered in Autodesk Maya, with finishing touches and compositing done in Adobe After Effects.
I was also asked to create some sound design for the piece. As fits letters moving through an abstract space, yet moving along an invisible ground, most of the sound effects are whooshing and sliding noises and a thud when the TeamUSA mark initially falls into view. We tried some sparkling sounds to accompany the traveling light gleams, but in the end what really ties the whole thing together are the sounds of an ecstatic crowd, once again evoking the excitement of an unspecified olympic event.
