For this animation, we teamed up with the medical trade show booth experts at V-olution. The hospital equipment giant Maquet makes several lines of emergency room chest drains, and the brief here was to demonstrate the differences between them in a compelling manner, without sound. After showing reverse exploded views of each drain, we jump back and forth between pairs of the drains in long continuous moves. As many of the key features are only seen inside the units, we devised a system of fading off the front panels to reveal the inner workings. Keeping that “in-camera” look was an extra challenge when it came to the extensive explanatory copy, which was not done as a voice-over due to the omnipresent cacaphony at trade shows. We stuck the type onto translucent panels which move and rotate in sync with the chest drains. The camera in the 3:45 video never stops moving, so even though we need to have the paragraphs in view long enough to read them, the action stays alive. The chest drains, with their extensive tubing, valves, and suction dials, came to us as CAD/CAM models, and were rebuilt, textured, and rigged in Maya here at G61. Hospital execs loved it!

The brief included a wide shot of the shirt magnets snapping closed up the front of the shirt with just one flick, as well as an exploded view of the magnetic button components. This was all rendered in a chalkboard sketch style using Maya’s PaintFX and toon shading. In addition to the spot, we created elements for a 3D lenticular POS display.

This 30-second promo is tasked with associated the Nickelodeon brand with the popular show, emphasizing the comedic aspects of the characters’ personalities.

Branding agency Leroy + Clarkson called on Galaxy 61’s animation team to bring the characters to life. At first we only see Motu and Patlu in the dark. they are inside a Nickelodeon gift box. Motu is sleeping, and snoring, and generally annoying Patlu, until Patlu gets an idea- he orders samosas, Motu’s favorite food,. Motu springs to life and rips the box open to get the samosas, freeing them, and their entire world, from the confines of the box.

The title character is a 9-year old superhero with a gadget-laden bicycle and a posse of loyal friends to help him keep his town’s endless supply of villains in line. As Shiva is a popular new show, the goals for the promos were to reinforce that new episodes can be seen on Nick India, and to emphasize the comedy and adventure aspects of the show.

Branding Agency Leroy & Clarkson turned to Galaxy 61 to handle the animation of 5 characters on 5 vehicles in the 15-second ident. The main gag revolves around Ladoo Singh, the chief of police. Ladoo is tooling along on his motorcycle, ever the tough cop with mirrored shades and attitude. Suddenly, Shiva appears out of nowhere, passing ladoo while simply pedaling his bicycle. Ladoo is nonplussed. As Shiva’s friends join in, he puts the icing on the cake with a blast from his rocket thruster, propelling him through the Nickelodeon Sonic logo.

The Brief: Shiva is a new and very popular children’s show on Nickelodeon India. The title character is a 9-year old superhero with a gadget-laden bicycle and a posse of loyal friends to help him keep his town’s endless supply of villains in line.
Branding Agency Leroy & Clarkson turned to Galaxy 61 to handle the animation of 10 characters (11 if you count Shiva’s bicycle) in the 30-second promo. The main gag revolves around Ladoo Singh, the chief of police. Ladoo is not actually the one clobbering all those bad guys- he is enjoying a box of donuts while Shiva takes the crooks out with his bicycle. Fans of the show know that Ladoo will take all the credit, but Shiva and his friends get their moment of glory.

Our crack character animation team gleefully ran with the premise, inventing many bits of business as well as severely distorted slo-mo “just been punched” facial expressions. The end results are hilarious.

Ogilvy Commonhealth turned to Galaxy 61 to create 8 spots focused on their own ad campaigns, targeted to judges at the Cannes Lions competition. These “commercials for commercials” each presented a unique set of challenges, in most cases taking the elements of the campaigns to tell the stories of their creation without overshadowing the campaigns themselves.

For Yondelis “Diver”, layers of imagery from the original print ad were used to create a gorgeous undersea environment, gradually revealing the titular diver with a long tail of floating molecules.

For Rhinocort, an ever-accelerating parade of frustrated faces leads to reveal that the frustration is being experience by a person’s nose. To tie it all together, we chose klezmer music, which we manipulated to accelerate at an absurd pace.

The GSK “Big Bad Cough” campaign was presented as an animated children’s storybook, With a “Once upon a time” Voice over and Danny Elfman style cinematic music.

For Yondelis “Challenge” we let the beautifully edgy website speak for itself, with interactive clips and animation built up from its visual elements.

The two spots for Roche- “Bulbs” and “B-Cell” combine interactive graphics, video content and still imagery from the conference booths to build an impression of the campaign.

“Match” uses stock footage to lead up to the arresting final image from the print campaign.

And “Moms” builds on campaign imagery with stock photos of mothers loving life and having it all, to the tune of upbeat arena rock.

As a highly scalable and flexible animation and design studio, Galaxy 61 was able to produce these 8 disparate spots in an astonishing 2 weeks.

For the competitive back to school retail season, Price Chopper wanted to feature family-oriented imagery in a bold package with 3D animation, similar to The “Holiday Pop-up” and “Bags 2 Riches” campaigns we had done together. Creative Director John Akots and Advertising Supervisor Telly Rainsberg came to me with several concepts, but the one we all loved was the idea of using refrigerator magnets and snapshots to tell the story. Since everyone with kids in school has magnets all over their refrigerators, this is something universal.

The story is narrated by a young girl, describing how her mother gets everything she needs at Price Chopper, and saves money on gas in the process. Using 3D animation enabled us to tightly choreograph the spot, with a single POV camera move starting at the closing of the refrigerator door, tracking past photos of a girl eating lunch, studying, playing soccer, and greeting her mom at the bus stop. The 30 second move ends with the Back 2 School logo and a montage of Price Chopper’s various brand logos.

The hunt was on for iconic-looking magnets that reflected school-based themes- pencils, books, school buses- as well as foods and other items that one might find at price chopper (pizza, fruit, donuts). Since one of the key points was fuel savings, there are car keys dangling on a magnetic hook. We also wanted to make sure there were other things stuck to the refrigerator with magnets, like a spiral-bound shopping list and a post-it note. The item/price deals and iPad image were made to look like paper ripped out of a flyer or a magazine. Colorful plastic letters and even magnetic poetry pieces were used for the “Back 2 School” logo and other type elements.

The creatives felt it was important to have a human element in the spot. After exploring ways to have hands placing magnets or otherwise interacting with the stuff on the refrigerator, we settled on reflections of a girl closing the door, a mom walking past, depositing her car keys on the hook, and the girl running by once again to punctuate the contest section. Obtaining the appropriate footage was proving to be a challenge given the time and budget, and the original decision to have a reflective black metal door meant we needed high-quality footage of people doing these things to appear in the door’s reflections. A solution was inadvertently found when we changed the door to brushed stainless steel, which more immediately says “refrigerator” but also has diffuse reflections, so we were able to work with very roughly shot footage instead, like that of Akots’ daughter closing the refrigerator door (shot with an iPhone).
